Genealogy Schmitz – Smits

A Schmitz became a Smits

On 20th September 1813 in the town of Didam, not far from Arnhem, a Peter Joseph Schmitz and Christina Schut married. The name of the groom points to a German origin.

Referring to the Netherlands or Germany about 1813 is however a bit tricky, because in 1813 there were no real borders. The current Netherlands and most parts of Germany on the left side of the Rhine river were part of the French Empire. We can therefore not say that Peter Joseph emigrated to the Netherlands. He just moved from the 'Ruhr' district to the district of 'Boven IJssel'

For his marriage he had to present documents issued by the municipality of his native village like e.g. transcripts of the death certificates of his mother and father. These transcripts were issued in July 1813 by the mayor of Pütz; the municipality where his home village Margarethenherten (at that time already known as and currently only known as Grottenherten) belonged to.

The transcript of the death certificate of his mother, Gertrud Caßel, is largely written in the German language surrounded with some French introductions and endings. When his mother died the area must have been French or under strong French influence, because the death certificate shows that she died on the 12th day of the month Pluviose in the 10th year of the French Republik which equals the Gregorian calender date of 1 February 1802. This death certificate also contains the name of her spouse Wilhelm Heinrich Schmitz and her parents:Franz Caßel and Catharina Schopen.

The death certificate of Peter's father Wilhelm Heinrich Schmitz, who died 11 years later in June 1813, is entirely written in the French language. There are two versions of his death certificate; one being a copy of the official death certificate which contains a strange error, because Gertrud Caßel is mentioned as his mother and not as his spouse. The second document is a transcript of the same certificate, but issued in July 1813, a month after the official death certificate. In this document his real mother, Maria Kelzenberg, appears but this correction was never applied to the official death certificate because a modern transcript published on a CD-ROM of a German genealogy society still mentions his mother as Gertrud Caßel. All data sources were consistent with respect to the father of Wilhelm Heinrich, the grandfather of Peter Joseph; all sources show a Jakob Schmitz.

A remarkable fact in the death certificate of Wilhelm Heinrich Schmitz is perhaps that his death was not reported by one of his own sons. It was his son-in-law Johann Theodor Brell and a brother-in-law, from Niederembt, Wilhelm Meuser (probably married to a sister of Gertrud Caßel) who reported his death. Both of them were farmers. Either his eldest sons already passed away or, like Peter Joseph, they were not close at home at the time Wilhelm Heinrich died.

When Peter Joseph actually left his home village is unknown. He probably arrived in Didam between 1810 and 1813.

Johannes Josephus joined the police force in Arnhem in 1883: badge nummer 639. Between 1889 and November 1898 he served as county constable in Duiven and as communal police officer in Zevenaar. On 18 November 1898 he was appointed county constable in Hengelo Ov. were he retired on 15 August 1923. On 27 August 1922 he received the medal in bronze of the 'Orde van Oranje Nassau'.
