Two Dutch players win individual award
TAIPEI (Taiwan) - Ralph Milliard and Evert-Jan 't Hoen were honored for their individual achievements during the 34th World Cup.
Milliard was the leader with seven stolen bases, while 't Hoen was crowned homerun champion with three.

Cuba claimes 23rd world title
TAIPEI (Taiwan) - Cuba re-assured its world domincance in baseball by defeating USA 5-3 in the final game of the 34th World Cup, taking revenge for last years loss in the Sydney Olympics.
The game was tied 2-2 in the eighth, when Cuba rallied for three runs. Orestes Kindelan scored the important go-ahead run when he slided by American catcher Ken Huckaby, who awaited the throw from leftfield, made a tagging move, but never got hold of the ball which laid on the ground between his legs. German Mesa then added a runscoring single to make it 5-3.
In 2003, the World Championships will be played in Cuba.

Taiwan wins bronze medal
TAIPEI (Taiwan) - Chin-Feng Chen became an even bigger hometown hero as he belted a two-run homerun in the seventh to lift Taiwan to a 3-0 win over Japan in the bronze medal game. Pitcher Chih-Chia Chang went the distance and allowed only five hits.

Panama beats Korea for fifth place
TAIPEI (Taiwan) - Panama trailed 1-0 vs. South Korea in the fifth when Fredy Herrera hit a two-run homerun. In the sixth Julio Mosquera added a solo-homerun. With the results, Panama finished in fifth place.

Cuba goes to final
TAIPEI (Taiwan) - Cuba became the second finalist for the World Cup final as it had to play extra innings vs. Japan, but went on to win 3-1 in eleven innings on saturday-evening. The game finished almost an hour after the USA-Taiwan game.
The Cuba-USA match-up will be a replay of the final game of last years Olympic Games in Sydney, which was won by the United States.

TAIPEI (Taiwan) - USA became the first team to clinch a spot in the final game of the 34th World Cup, beating host country Taiwan, 4-1 on Saturday-evening.

Eenhoorn elected in Athletes Commission
TAIPEI (Taiwan) - On Tuesday, Aldo Notari, President of the International BAseball Federation (IBAF), announced that Claudio Liverziani (Italy), Omar Linares (Cuba), Masanori Sugiura (Japan), Robert Eenhoorn (The Netherlands) and Josh Bard (USA) were elected to the IBAF Athletes Commission. There were eight candidates fof five spots. The five were elected by the players who are participating in this years World Cup.
Liverziani, who played in the minor league for the Seattle Mariners and, received the most votes with 118, followed by Linares, who got 115. Linares won five World Cup gold medals with Cuba and also captured Olympic gold in 1992 and 1996. Sugiura finished third with 105 votes and played in three Olympics and one World Cup with Japan. Eenhoorn, finishing fourth with 99 votes, is a former Major League-player (New York Yankees/Anaheim Angels) and current Dutch manager, playing in the 1988 and 2000 Olympics and 1988 World Cup. Bard, fifth with 96 votes, played in the Cleveland Indians-system and the 1998 World Cup.
Not elected were Matthew Sheldon-Collins (Australia), Jae Woo Baek (South Korea) and Nicholas Dempsey (South Africa), who got not enough votes.

Dutch applies for World Cup 2005 candidacy
TAIPEI (Taiwan) - The Royal Dutch Baseball and Softball Association (KNBSB) on Monday officially applied for candidacy to organize the 2005 World Cup baseball event. The candidacy was announced in the Taiwanese capitol Taipei, where the 34rd edition of the World Cup is staged at the moment.
The KNBSB offered its bidbook during an impressive presentation to the Executive Committee of the IBAF. The presentation was made by Jan de Vos from Rotterdam Topsport, which is a major supporter of the KNBSB in organizing the World event. In 1986, The Netherlands also organized a succesfull World Championship.
,,The Netherlands wants to organize major sporting events, which is stimulated by our Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport as well as the NOC*NSF, our Olympic Committee and national sports body'', said Dutch KNBSB-President Theo Reitsma (pictured right) in his Taipei hotel. ,,Organizing the World Cup will be a great moment for our country. It will stimulate the sport and attract a lot of attention.'' Also supporting the KNBSB in its bid are the NOS (Dutch national television) and the municipalities of Rotterdam and Haarlem. Both cities have a wellknown history in organizing major international baseball tournaments. In Haarlem, the Haarlem Baseball Week is being organized every even year since 1961, while in Rotterdam, the World Port Tournament is staged every odd year since 1985.
The announcement who will organize the 2005 World Cup tournament is expected in August next year.
