Caribbean World Series 2003
The Caribbean World Series 2003 will opened on February 2 in Carolina, a suburb of San Juan, Puerto Rico with four teams.
The four teams that annually participate are the champions of the professional winter leagues in the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Venezuela. Due to the political situation in Venezuela in late 2002 and early 2003, the country decided not to participate in the 2003-edition. The runner-up of organizing country Puerto Rico was awarded that spot.

De vier teams die jaarlijks deelnemen zijn de kampioenen van de professionele winter leagues in de Dominicaanse Republiek, Mexico, Puerto Rico en Venezuela. Vanwege de politieke situatie in Venezuela eind 2002 en beging 2003, besloot dat land niet deel te nemen aan de editie 2003. Die plaats werd toegewezen aan de runner-up van het organiserende Puerto Rico.

Águilas, Indios win openers
CAROLINA (Puerto Rico) - On the first day of the 45th Caribbean World Series, Dominican champion Águilas Cibaeñas opened with a 4-3 win on Sunday vs. Puerto Rican runner-up Criollos de Caguas. Later on the day, Puerto Rican champion Indios de Mayagüez shutout Mexican champion Cañeros de Los Mochis, 2-0. All games are being played in Estadio Roberto Clemente Walker in Carolina, Puerto Rico. The stadium is named after Major League-great Roberto Clemente.
In the opening game, Águilas took a 3-0 lead after scoring once in the third and twice in the fourth. In the third inning, Rafael Furcal reached on a bunt-single, then scored on a double by Luis Polonia. In the fourth, Alberto Castillo hit a 2-run double. But then Caguas tied the score with a 3-run fifth inning. With Orlando Merced on base, Edward Guzmán homered, followed by a solo-homerun by Héctor Ortíz. Águilas re-took the lead in the sixth on a homerun by David Ortíz.
In the second game, the first five innings between Los Mochis and Mayagüez was a pitching-duel between Bronswell Patrick (Los Mochis) and Dicky Gonzalez (Mayagüez, but the difference was the second inning in which the Indios scored twice. José Valentín led off with a walk, stole second and scored on an RBI-single by Julius Matos. A single by Javier Valentín moved Matos to third base, who then scored on a sac-fly by Wilbert Nieves. Patrick struckout seven in seven innings, allowed only four hits, but ended up as the losing pitcher, while Gonzalez was the winner and the first of six pitchers used by Mayagüez.

CAROLINA (Puerto Rico) - Op de eerste dag van de 45ste Caribbean World Series opende de Dominicaanse kampioen Águilas Cibaeñas zondag met een 4-3 zege vs. de Puerto Ricaanse runner-up Criollos de Caguas. Later op de dag boekte de Puerto Ricaanse kampioen Indios de Mayagüez een 2-0 shutout vs. de Mexicaanse kampioen Cañeros de Los Mochis. Alle wedstijden worden gespeeld in het Estadio Roberto Clemente Walker in Carolina, Puerto Rico. Het stadion is vernoemd naar Major League-grootheid Roberto Clemente.
In de openingswedstrijd nam Águilas een 3-0 voorsprong door eenmaal te scoren in de derde en tweemaal in de vierde. In de derde inning bereikte Rafael Furcal het honk op een stootslag-honkslag en scoorde daarna op een double van Luis Polonia. In de vierde sloeg Alberto Castillo een 2-run double. Second win for Águilas, Indios
CAROLINA (Puerto Rico) - On the second day of competition, Águilas Cibaeñas (Dominican Republic) and Indios de Mayagüez (Puerto Rico) also won their second game. Águilas broke a 4-4 tie in the seventh and beat Cañeros de Los Mochis (Mexico), 8-4, while the Indios scored the winning run in the ninth to beat Criollos de Caguas (Puerto Rico), 4-3. The four teams that play in the Caribbean World Series are all allowed to make roster changes after its Play-Offs and add players from other teams. As a result, players are participating who were playing for teams who were eliminated in the Play-Offs.
The most 'new' players played in the game between Águilas and Los Mochis. Águilas had four players in its starting line-up, that played for other teams during the Dominican Play-Offs. Los Mochis also had four new players, three of whom played for other teams during the Mexican Play-Offs, and one (Anton French), who last week became Dominican champion as a player for Águilas, whom he now played against. Águilas took a 3-0 lead in the first on an RBI-double by Félix José (Estrellas Orientales) and a 2-run double by Tony Batista. They added a run in the second on back-to-back doubles by Rafael Furcal (Leones del Escogido) and Luis Polonia, who went 3-for-5. Los Mochis, whose first six batters were Americans, scored twice in the third on a 2-run double by Heber Gómez (Venados de Mazatlán). Calvin Pickering homered in the fourth for the Mexicans, who tied the score in the fifth on an RBI-single by former Dutch MVP Darryl Brinkley (Águilas de Mexicali). In the seventh, Águilas broke the 4-4 tie with a 3-run rally. Guillermo García led off with a homerun, which was later followed by RBI-singles by Luis Polonia and Miguel Tejada, last years American League MVP as player of the Oakland A's. Águilas made it 8-4 when Abraham Núñez (Estrellas Orientales) homered in the eighth.
Day Two ended with the game between the two Puerto Rican-teams, who also had made roster-changes for the Series. Caguas took an early 3-0 lead in the first inning, but that proved to be their only runs in the game. In the inning, José Muñoz reached on a bunt-single and Ramón Vázquez walked and both scored on a 2-out, 3-run homerun by Orlando Merced, who played in the regular season for Cangrejeros de Santurce, which didn't qualify for the Puerto Rican Play-Offs this season. Mayagüez anwswered with a run in the second on an RBI-double by Javier Valentín, who also batted in the second run in eighth. Then, in the home ninth, Luis Figueroa led off with a single and advanced on a sac-bunt by Donnell McDonald, but a throwing error by the Caguas-pitcher to force Figueroa at second resulted in runners at first and third base. Two added players then helped Mayagüez win the game. Figueroa scored the tying run on a sac-fly by César Crespo (Gigantes de Carolina) and, after powerhitter José Valentín was walked intentionally, Luis López (Leones de Ponce) followed with the game-winning single.

CAROLINA (Puerto Rico) - Op de tweede speeldag wonnen Águilas Cibaeñas (Dominicaanse Republiek) en Indios de Mayagüez (Puerto Rico) ook hun tweede wedstrijd. Águilas brak een 4-4 stand in de zevende en versloeg Cañeros de Los Mochis (Mexico), 8-4, terwijl de Indios het winnende punt in de negende inning scoorde en Criollos de Caguas (Puerto Rico) met 4-3 versloeg. De vier ploegen die deelnemen aan de Caribbean World Series mochten allen, na afloop van de eigen Play-Offs, roster-wijzigigen maken en spelers toevoeren van andere ploegen. Mayagüez takes lead with shutout
CAROLINA (Puerto Rico) - Indios de Mayagüez (Puerto Rico) won its third game in a row after shutting out favorite Águilas Cibaeñas (Dominican Republic), 10-0 on Monday. The Dominicans were also unbeaten after the first two days of the Caribbean World Series. The third day started with the first win for Criollos de Caguas (Puerto Rico), that won 4-1 vs. Cañeros de Los Mochis (Mexico), that now has lost all three games and is elminated for the title.
Caguas started early when Orlando Merced homered in the first, then added another run in the second when Alex Cintrón tripled and scored on a wild pitch. Two more runs were scored in the sixth, before Los Mochis finally scored its only run on three consecutive hits in the ninth inning. Winning pitcher Angel 'Chimilón' Miranda gave up two hits and struckout five in five innings.
The game between Mayagüez and Águilas started with dominating pitching. Águilas-starter and loser Odalis Pérez gave up a lead-off single to Rafael Furcal, but then struckout the next three batters, while Mayagüez-starter and winner Enrique Calero struckout the first five batters he faced. Calero pitched six strong innings, giving the only two hits in the game by Águilas. Fernando Cabrera pitched the last three innings, striking six, but also walking five. Mayagüez opened the score with a 3-run fourth, scoring on a sac-fly by Julius Matos and RBI-singles by Wilbert Nieves and Luis Figueroa. In the fifth, José Valentín homered, before the team added another run in the sixth and five more in the seventh, highlighted by RBI-doubles by Wilbert Nieves and Julius Matos. Mayagüez had 14 hits, including three by Donzell McDonald (two doubles, three RBI's) and José Valentín (double, homer, three runs).

CAROLINA (Puerto Rico) - Indios de Mayagüez (Puerto Rico) won maandag de derde wedstrijd op rij met een 10-0 shutout vs. favoriet Águilas Cibaeñas (Dominicaanse Republiek). De Dominicanen waren na twee speeldagen eveneens ongeslagen op de Caribbean World Series. De derde dag begon met de eerste zege voor Criollos de Caguas (Puerto Rico), dat met 4-1 won vs. Cañeros de Los Mochis (Mexico), dat nu driemaal op rij heeft verloren en is uitgeschakeld voor de titel.
Caguas begon vroeg toen Orlando Merced homerde in de eerste en voegde daarna een run toe in de tweede toen Alex Cintrón een triple sloeg en scoorde op een wilde worp. CAROLINA (Puerto Rico) - Indios de Mayagüez (Puerto Rico) remained unbeaten on Wednesday by winning its fourth game in a row, a 7-1 victory vs. Cañeros de Los Mochis (Mexico), that lost its fourth in a row. Águilas Cibaeñas (Dominican Republic) eliminated Criollos de Caguas (Puerto Rico) by defeating them, 7-4, to stay in the championship race.
In the first game of Day Four, Caguas took a 3-0 lead. The team scored once in the second on a basesloaded sac-fly by Jorge Padilla and twice in the third on a 2-out, 2-run homerun by Edward Guzmán. Águilas tied the score with a 3-run third with the first run being scored on a basesloaded hit by pitch for Tony Batista. In the fourth, Caguas re-took the lead on a fielder's choice grounder by Jorge Padilla, but Águilas then scored two runs in its fourth to take the lead to keep. In the inning, Guillermo García led off with a double, Rafael Furcal was hit by a pitch and Luis Polonia walked, before Miguel Tejada hit an RBI-single and Félix José got a basesloaded walk. Two more runs were scored in the fifth on a 2-run single by Miguel Tejada. Caguas got the bases loaded in the seventh, but failed to add more runs. Caguas had 14 hits, while Águilas had 'only' ten, including three by Miguel Tejada and Luis Polonia.
Mayagüez handed Los Mochis its fourth loss and took an early 5-0 lead after three innings. The Puerto Rican team scored three runs in the first, highlighted by a 2-run double by Luis López, who added a 2-run homerun in the third with Alex Díaz on base. Two more runs were scored later in the game on a 2-run basehit by José Valentín. Los Mochis scored its only run in the fifth when Darryl Brinkley hit a homerun. Brinkley, who played in the Baltimore Orioles triple-A team last year, missed another homerun in the second. The ball hit an advertisement-board, which looked to be out of play, but the umpires ruled it no homerun. In 1991-1992, Brinkley played for Haarlem-based Kinheim in The Netherlands and was voted the Dutch Major League in 1992.

Mayagüez diende Los Mochis de vierde nederlaag toe en nam een snelle 5-0 voorsprong na drie innings. De Puerto Ricaanse ploeg scoorde drie punten in de eerste met als hoogtepunt een 2-run double van Luis López, die een 2-run homerun toevoegde in de derde met Alex Díaz op het honk. Twee extra runs werden later in het duel nog gescoord op een 2-run honkslag van José Valentín. Los Mochis scoorde het enige punt in de vijfde toen Darryl Brinkley een homerun sloeg. Brinkley, die vorig seizoen uitkwam voor het triple-A team van de Baltimore Orioles, miste ook nog een homerun in de tweede. De bal kwam toen tegen een reclamebord, dat buiten het veld leek te staan, maar de umpires zagen er geen homerun in. In 1991-1992 speelde Brinkley voor het Haarlemse Kinheim en was in 1992 de MVP van de Hoofdklasse.

Mayagüez needs one win for title
CAROLINA (Puerto Rico) - Indios de Mayagüez (Puerto Rico) is one victory away from winning the Caribbean World Series. On Thursday, Mayagüez won its fifth game in a row after nipping Criollos de Caguas (Puerto Rico), 1-0. Also on Thursday, Águilas Cibaeñas (Dominican Republic) won 11-4 vs. Cañeros de Los Mochis (Mexico). On Friday, Mayagüez will play against Águilas. If the Puerto Rican team wins, it alo wins the Caribbean title. When Águilas wins, both teams are tied in first place, resulting in an extra decisive game to be played on Saturday.
Águilas opened Day Five with a 3-run third vs. Los Mochis on a 3-run homerun by David Ortíz. After Los Mochis scored its first run in the fourth on a homerun by Saúl Soto, Águilas scored four runs in the fifth to take 7-1 lead. In the inning, Tony Batista hit a 2-run double, Félix José a 1-run double and Raúl Mondesí and RBI-single. Los Mochis then scored its second run in the sixth, but Águilas got the run back in the seventh on another RBI-single by Raúl Mondesí. Trailing 8-2, Los Mochis scored twice in the seventh on consecutive hits by Darryl Brinkley, Matías Carrillo and Bubba Smith. Now leading 8-4, Águilas added three more runs in the eighth on a 2-run triple by Miguel Tejada, who scored himself on an RBI-single by David Ortíz, who went 3-for-4 with a double, homerun and four RBI's.
In the evening, Mayagüez won its fifth game, scoring only once vs. Caguas. The run was scored in the sixth. With one out, José Valentín singled and Luis López walked. Both advanced on a sac-bunt by Julius Matos, which was followed by an RBI-single by Javier Valentín, that scored his brother José. Winning pitcher Chris Rojas gave up only three hits in six innings. Caguas added only one extra hit on two relievers. Caguas used seven pitchers.
(February 7)Mayagüez één zege af van titel
CAROLINA (Puerto Rico) - Indios de Mayagüez (Puerto Rico) is één zege af van de titel in de Caribbean World Series. Op de donderdag won Mayagüez de vijfde wedstrijd op rij na een nipte 1-0 shutout vs. Criollos de Caguas (Puerto Rico). Ook op donderdag won Águilas Cibaeñas (Dominicaanse Republiek) met 11-4 vs. Cañeros de Los Mochis (Mexico). Op vrijdag speelt Mayagüez tegen Águilas. Wanneer de Puerto Ricaanse ploeg wint, pakt het ook de Caribbean-titel. Wanneer Águilas wint staan beide ploegen samen op de eerste plaats en zal er zaterdag een beslissingswedstrijd worden gespeeld.
Águilas opende Day Five met een 3-run derde vs. Los Mochis op een 3-run homerun van David Ortíz. Nadat Los Mochis het eerste punt scoore in de vierde op een homerun van Saúl Soto, scoorde Águilas viermaal in de vijfde en nam een 7-1 voorsprong. In deze slagbeurt sloeg Tony Batista een 2-run double, Félix José een 1-run double en Raúl Mondesí een RBI-single. Los Mochis scoorde daarna het tweede punt in de zesde, maar Águilas pakte het punt terug in de zevende op wederom een RBI-single van Raúl Mondesí. Met een 8-2 achterstand scoorde Los Mochis tweemaal in de zevende op achtereenvolgende hits van Darryl Brinkley, Matías Carrillo en Bubba Smith. Nu met een 8-4 voosprong, scoorde Águilas nog eens driemaal in de achtste op een 2-run triple van Miguel Tejada, die zelf scoorde op een RBI-single van David Ortíz, die 3-uit-4 sloeg met een double, homerun en vier RBI's.
's Avonds won Mayagüez de vijfde wedstrijd en scoorde slechts eenmaal vs. Caguas. Het punt werd gescoord in de zesde. Met één uit sloeg José Valentín een honkslag en kreeg Luis López vier wijd. Beiden schoven op na een OSS van Julius Matos, die werd gevolgd door een RBI-single van Javier Valentín, waarop zijn broer José scoorde. Winnende werper Chris Rojas stond slechts drie hits toe in zes innings. Caguas kon hier nog slechts één extra hit aan toevoegen op twee relievers. Caguas gebruikte zeven werpers.
