BBA
BBA is founded in 1934 when six tramcompanies merge. Three years later all passenger trams are replaced by buses. Until 2002 BBA ran mainly buses in the provincie of Noord-Brabant. In that year BBA wins the bustransport concession for the northwestern part of the province Utrecht. Two years later BBA also wins the bustransport concession for the Veluwe area.
In 2001 all shares were sold to French company Connex (now: Veolia Transport). In 2007 the name on the buses changed into Veolia. Untill the end of the bustransport concession (december 2008) buses in the northwestern part of the province Utrecht still had the name BBA.
HTM
The Haagsche Tramweg-Maatschappij (HTM = The Hague Tramway Company) is founded in 1887. HTM runs from that moment the city transport in The Hague. In the same year the horsetram to Delft is replaced by a steamtram. The first electric tram runs in 1904. HTM's last steamtram runs in 1924. Since 1924 HTM also runs buses.
Lovers Rail
Lovers is a company that exploits canal boat tours through the canals of Amsterdam and Utrecht. Lovers Rail starts on august 11th 1996 a trainservice between Amsterdam and IJmuiden (near the beach), the Kennermerstrand Express. This trainservice is discontinued in 1998. From 1996 until 1999 in march, april and may Lovers Rail runs the Keukenhof Express from Amsterdam to Lisse (where flower park Keukenhof is situated).
Besides these two touristlines Lovers starts under the name of Optio on may 26th 1998 a service between Amsterdam and Haarlem, the Spaarne Express.
This trainservice was intended for commuters.
Due to lack of passengers this trainservice, the last of Lovers Rail, is discontinued on september 14th 1999.
Lovers also had rights to run trains between The Hague and Leiden and between Utrecht and Hilversum.
This, however, they never did.
In 1997 Lovers sold 70 percent of the Lovers Rail shares to French company CGEA (now: Veolia Transport).
Midnet
Midnet was founded in 1994 when Centraal Nederland and VAD merged. In 1999 Midnet merged with ZWN, NZH and Oostnet to form Connexxion. Midnet exploited bustransport in the Nieuwegein - Utrecht - Arnhem - Zwolle area. Midnet also exploited the tram Utrecht - Nieuwegein / IJsselstein.
Syntus
Syntus exploits public transport in the Achterhoek area since 1999. This public transport exists of several busroutes and the railway lines Zutphen - Winterswijk and Doetinchem - Winterswijk. In 2001 the railwayline Arnhem - Doetinchem is taken over from Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS). The area of transport is extended in december 2003 with a part of Twente. This includes the railway line Zutphen - Oldenzaal. De railwayline in the Betuwe-area (from Arnhem to Tiel) is exploited by Syntus since april 2005. As a subcontractor for Connexxion Syntus exploits the train from Almelo to Mariënberg.
At the beginning Syntus is owned by Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS), Connexxion and French company Cariane Multimodal International (CMI, now: Keolis). Connexxion sells its shares in 2007 to the other two shareholders.
Syntus introduces in september 2004 the Weekenddagkaart (Weekend day rover). This day rover is based on the German Schönes-Wochenende-Ticket (Beautiful Weekend Ticket). After a 4-month trial period the ticket becomes definitive in 2005.
- rules:
- valid on saterday, sunday or a holiday
- valid in all Syntus trains and buses, except nighttrains and nightbuses
- valid for 2 adults 3 children (4-11 years)
In june 2005 the validaty is expanded to the buses of BBA (now Veolia) in the Veluwe-area and the buses of Arriva in the Rivierenland-area. In the same month the province Gelderland starts a campaign to promote the Weekenddagkaart. The railwayservice Zutphen - Apeldoorn by NS is added in 2006. Take a look at the map of this area for the Weekenddagkaart.
After two years, in 2007, the province stops the campaign. Sales have risen only in the Achterhoek-area. Especially in the Rivierenland-area sales are disappointing. The province believes this is due to the limited operating schedule in this area. The Weekenddagkaart is succesfull in the Achterhoek-area. According to the the province this is due to the possibility of using the ticket in trains in the Achterhoek.
As a replacement for the Weekenddagkaart Syntus introduces in july 2008 the Superticket. This dayrover has the same rules as the Weekenddagkaart with a few exceptions.
- The ticket is only valid in Syntus buses and trains.
- In Syntus buses the ticket is valid during the entire week.
