Brief Description

The 1851 census describes Thomas as an Ironmonger of Liskeard, and daughter Mary Ann married into the Trevan family in 1847. She and her husband William Henry Trevan continued the name Wallis by passing it on as a middle name to 4 of their children.

It is possible that their marriage was on 15 Feb 1823 at Stoke Damerel in which case Mary Ann's maiden name was Ruby. However, there were many Wallis family members living there, so this could be a different Thomas Wallis marrying a different Mary Ann.

It would appear that the family lived in Liskeard (place of birth for eldest daughter) before they moved to Bodmin where the yunger children were christened. The Liskeard registers need to be searched for their marriage and also the christening of not only Mary Ann Wallis in or shortly after 1823, but also any other children.

The LDS online version of the IGI shows a few more of their children on Batch number P002752 (baptisms 1813-1875 for Bodmin).

  1. 9 May 1828 - John
  2. 12 Jul 1829 - Elizabeth
  3. 6 Jul 1831 - William
  4. 28 Aug 1833 - Louisa
  5. 2 Feb 1836 - Maria Jane
  6. 3 Feb 1839 - Ellen Roberts

At the same time there were other Wallis families living in the parish who were having their children baptised.

Other Wallis Families in Bodmin

It appears that the first Wallis family to move to the parish of Bodmin was John Wallis and Issabella who first used the church there in 1790 when they had 3 of their children christened. Two of their sons, Christopher and Preston, stayed in parish and were having their children christened in the same time frame as Thomas and Mary Ann. Another of their sons, John, had a single child baptised in the parish. Although it is probable that they are relatives, nothing has been found to confirm this. Searching the online version of the 1871 Cornwall census shows that the name rather unusual name of Preston Wallis was also being passed down a Wallis family branch in the parish of St Buryan. So it is probable that the Wallis families in the 2 areas are related.

There was a Thomas Wallis baptised in St Buryan on 2 Jun 1798, son of Thomas Wallish and Catherine nee Nicholas.
