Brief Description

The Watts family appear to have lived at Port Isaac for only a short while. John Trevan and his wife Jane (aka Jennifer aka Jenny) nee Watts are not listed in the marriages at St Endellion between 1684 and 1812, and their marriage has not been found in either Devon or Cornwall in the on-line IGI. Baptisms are recorded for their 5 children at St Endellion. The White House at Port Isaac passed into their possession and from them into the Trevan family when daughter Anne married John Archer Trevan. The earliest reference other than from parish registers found to the Watts family in Port Isaac is in Hambley and Hambly Family by Edmund Hambley, where on page 91 he states The grandmother of John Watts, senior, was Elizabeth Bosustowe, of the White House, 1710.

A little further down the same page is another mention reading Prior to the Watts family, their ancestors, the Bosustowes, lived there. The White House is Tudor in origin, and has always been in the same family, through the female lines, ever since. The children of the writer are probably the 12th generation to live there. Another reference to John Watts, presumably this one, is in the Ground Plan of Port Isaac in the Memoirs of the Parish of Endellion prior to the year 1834 by John Watts Trevan, a grandson of John and Jane, where at the end there is the following paragraph.

Two thirds of the Town Platt belong to Mr. J Watts, the other third to Robert Mitchell, being bought by Quaker Billing, Quaker Scantlebury and Mr. Trefry from John Hunt Esq., the descendent of Cheney's. J Watts grandfather bought it off the two former, and Robert Mitchell got his by his wife, who was a Trefry.

The John Watts mentioned in the Memoirs is either their grandson John (1806-1874) or their son John (1775-1833), most probably their grandson.

Both John and Jane and their son John are buried inside the church at St Endellion.

William Watts (1769/70-1833) and Peggy Wood (c1775-1853)

William Watts was baptised son of John and Jane Watts on 13 Feb 1770 at St Endellion. He married Peggy Wood on 11 Nov 1803 in St Endellion and at least their two children were baptised there.
Children:
  1. Mary Watts (1804-1814) bapt 23 Mar 1804, died 26 May 1814 aged 10 (from MI card index)
  2. John Watts (1806-1874) bapt 22 Jun 1806
  3. Mary Joanna Watts (c1813/4-1819) died 1 March 1819, age 5y 9m (from MI card index)
Note: If the data from the MI card index is right, both Mary's were alive at the same time for about a year. This needs to be checked out next time I can visit the Endellion graveyard.

It was most likely this John Watts who is listed as owning a number of properties in Port Isaac in the Memoirs of the Parish of Endellion prior to the year 1834 by John Watts Trevan. He is described as WATTS, Mr. John Originally of Devonport. Then of St Teath. The last representative of the family. Two in house.

The 1841 census shows him aged 35 and his mother Peggy aged 65 as a household, and both are described as Independent, so it looks like he was not married. They were living 3 houses (as enumerated) away from Frederick and Elizabeth Trevan.

The following is certainly a reference to this John. In the section Estates & Tenement's

1834
The following are the Estates Tenements &c in the Parish of St Endellion, specifying whom they originally and presently belong too, likewise by whom Tenented at this time.

Hunpark formerly part and parcel of the property of the Chinis (sic - Cheney's) the last of which family left it to their descendent J. Hunt Esqre by him to the Kakewich's and purchased from that family not many years since by Mr William Watt who's son John is the present Proprietor. It is now on lease to Thos Remick paying a Highrent of £5 per Ann & farmed by himself

Other references to Mr John Watts include Tithe Apportionment Numbers 1092,1093, part of 1076 shown on the Ground Plan of Port Isaac in the Memoirs by John Watts Trevan.

Peggy's death was registered at Bodmin in 1853Q1. Her son John's death age 68 was registered in Bodmin in 1874Q2.

John Watts (1775-1833)

This John Watts was baptised on 23 Apr 1775 at St Endellion, son of John and Jennifer Watts. The Monumental Inscription above gives his date of birth as just Feb 1775 and his date of death as 24 Jun 1833.

The following reference in the Memoirs is most likely referring to him.

Barn Part tenement - passed through many possessors now to the Trevan family Port Isaac executors of the late Mr John Watt

Richard Watts (c1783-1844) and Elizabeth Carpenter

Richard Watts was baptised on 15 Oct 1783 at St Endellion, son of John and Jenny Watts. He married Elizabeth Carpenter on 1 Jun 1811 at Lanteglos by Camelford. At the time of the 1831 directory, he was a Currier and Leather Cutter at Fore Street, Camelford. In the 1841 census he was described as a Currier and his wife Elizabeth was alive. Also nephew Adolphus Trevan and niece Susan Trevan were staying with them. His death was registered in the Camelford Registration District in 1844Q1
