Brief Description of the Family

Frederick was born on 4 Feb 1803 and was educated at St. Bartholomew's Hospital, London. He became a doctor at Port Isaac.

In 1833/4 either he or more likely his brother John Watts Trevan wrote the book which includes a section about the local inhabitants. At that time he was described as unmarried. By this time Frederick had already qualified as a Doctor and is listed as a property owner of 2 properties in his own right and as joint owner of a further 2 properties.

This book has been purchased by the Port Isaac Local History Group (who plan to publish it in due course) and they have deposited it at the Cornwall Record Office.

Malcolm Lee, secretary of the group, has compared the maps in this book with the Tithe Apportionments, and tried to identify the position on Dr Frederick Trevan's House:-

In John Watts Trevan's 1834 Map he shows Frederick Trevan as owning property number 98, and part of 99. Comparison with the Tithe Apportionment (TA) Map shows that property number 98 equates to Tithe Apportionment number 1064, and 99 is TA No 1066. 1064 is the house now known as Trevan House - 8 Dolphin Street. If, as is likely, the part of 1066 he occupied is that which butted onto Trevan House, it no longer exists (see Robin Penna's Map), although it was there on the 1905 map. All that is left of that group are the two cottages now known as Bramley and Cobweb - 27 and 29 Middle Street.

Trevan House is clearly a finer detailed house than the others in Port Isaac, suggesting it was of importance. See the finely ornamented Gutter Board, and the splendid rear entrance gate (the garden path to this gate is clearly shown in the 1880 OS Map, although, as Trevan's garden - TA No 1065 - did not go as far as Middle Street in the Tithe Map, this gate is most likely post 1840).

The house next to Trevan House, known as Vesta Cottage, has a date plaque 'A (or it may be R) Trevan 1812'. This has all the appearance of a true 1812 plaque. In the Tithe Map, this is TA no. 1072, owned by Samuel Worden of Tresungers.

Frederick Trevan also owned four fields at Trewetha known as Archer's Tenement (The hotel near there is still known as Archers), which he rented out to John Skinner. Trevan himself rented three fields at Port Isaac from Thomas Phillips, on what was then open fields between Port Isaac & Port Gaverne, now forming the northern side of New Road and Tintagel Terrace. All these fields I have marked on the Port Isaac (Archers Tenement) map, by putting the letters 'Tr' in them.

The other property owned by Frederick in c1833/4 and later by his father when the tithe maps were drawn up was number 33 in Squeeze-e-Belly Alley, aka Temple Bar, and about a decade later the tithe apportionment 1081 shows it as being owned by John Archer Trevan. He was also joint owner of property 99 (tithe apportionment number 1066) with Nathan Lobb and William Brown, and also of property 101 (tithe apportionment number 1082?) along with William Lark

In 1841, when he was in his late 30s, Frederick married Elizabeth Moon Hingston, from Bodmin, and they had 6 children, one of whom died as a child. According to 'Hambley and Hambly Family' written by Edmund Hambly, the Hingston family were Quakers and included "7 doctors in the Hingston family, closely associated with the Trevan family". Elizabeth's brother Andrew had a grandchild named Mabyn Trevan Hingston and a great-grandchild named Trevan Hingston.

The 1871 census shows the family living in Middle Street. A photo album of Port Isaac showing a map and some photographs of Port Isaac is available here.

In his 'Collectanea Cornubiensia' of 1890, G.C.Boase also describes him as an Admiralty surgeon and agent. Elizabeth died on 18 Nov 1884, 3 months before Frederick, who had not completed administering her will before he died on 22 Feb 1885. Probate was granted twice, firstly in 1885 and secondly in 1890. In Frederick's will he refers to 'my lands at Trelights and Treweatha and Haven Park in the parish of Endellion' and also 'the dwelling house and premises which I now occupy'.

At the time of the 1861 census he was recorded twice, once at home with his family and one in Padstow with his uncle Matthew who was a Surgeon there.

According to page 8 of the Scotsman newspaper of Sat 17th June, in 1865 he was appointed by the Admiralty to the Constance. He received his commision of the rank of Assistant Surgeon in the Royal Navy on 8 Dec 1863 and was promoted to Staff Surgeon on 14 Apr 1877. His ships included the Revenge (1869), Zealous (from 19 Jan 1870), the Achilles (from 19 Nov 1872) which was a reserve ship acting as a Coast Guard from Portland, and the Flora (from 12 May 1875) which travelled to the Cape of Good Hope in 1875. In 1879-80 he saw service in the Mediterranean on the Condor. Although listed as a naval Staff Surgeon in 1881 and 1885 he was not assigned to a ship. On the night of the census on 3 Apr 1881 he was at home with his parents. When he retired he returned to Port Isaac. He was a bachelor when he died on 13 Nov 1889, leaving the majority of his estate to his siblings and nephew Edmund Hambly.

Other Family Groups with Which They Had Contact

This generation of this branch of the family seems to have been extremely closely knit, with all of Frederick's siblings except brother Isaac staying close to the family home and in their wills leaving their inheritence to the family members. All except Isaac are buried together in the Trevan burial ground in the Churchyard at St. Endellion. Matthew (1841-89), eldest son of Frederick and Elizabeth is also buried there, as is John Watts, sister to Ann Watts and uncle to Frederick.
Also, since their second daughter was named after Frances Copeland nee Trevan, one of John Archer Trevan's sisters, presumably they had contact with her. One of Ralph Clark's letters to their brother Matthew, his brother-in-law, suggests that she was living in the St. Teath area.
Frederick married a girl from the Liskeard area, and his sister Anne married a man in the same area. Anne's children both took Moon as their middle name, which was the middle name for Frederick's wife Elizabeth, suggesting that the two families stayed close although they were not close geographically.
