Brief Description

Henry Meyers Trevan, known as Harry, was the eldest child of Henry Meirs Trevan and Kezia nee Milton and was born on 17 Aug 1864 and baptised at Charles Church Plymouth on 17 Aug 1864. At the time the familiy lived at 13 Briton Side, Plymouth. His cousin Phoebe Agnes Treliving Passmore was baptised from the same address on the same day. He was at home with his mother for the 1871 census when he was recorded as Harry. By 1881 he was still living with his parents at 26 Frederick St and he was an apprentice shipwright.

He married Kate Ellen Lousie Osborne on 22 Dec 1887 at St Peters, Plymouth. According to his granddaughter Audrey Gunn nee Trevan, he married young to get away from the large and increasing family. She also said that he was a lay reader at Stoke Damerel Church of England Church, at the time of Rev Ponsonby. In later life, when he moved to Peverell, he followed the St Pancras Church, Pennycross.

Before they married Kate was living with her family at 1 Wellington Street at the time of the 1881 census. There were 5 families at this address.

1 Wellington St, Stoke Damerel Ref RG11 reel 2211 folio 46 page 21
Eli Osborne Head Mar 45 Blacksmith Cheriton Bishop, Devon
Eliza A Osborne Wife Mar 46   Torpoint, Cornwall
Kate E L Osborne Daur Unm 17 Dressmaker Devonport, Devon
Herbert E Osborne Son Unm 12 Scholar Devonport, Devon

After they married they lived at 2 Wellington St, at least from 1888-91. Her mother had died by the time of the 1891 census and her widowed father and brother were living with them. Her brother was now a joiner and her father was still a blacksmith. By 1896 Henry and Kate were living at 3 Napier Street.

In the 1901 census they where recorded as living in Devonport and their surname has been transcribed as Trevon. Harry's profession was given as a Recorder at the Dockyard, and he was still in the same job at the time of his son Sidney's marriage in 1916. Father Eli is recorded also living in Devonport but age 46 (sic), born in Crockeswell (sic) Devon (Crockernwell in the parish of Cheriton Bishop), occupation Blacksmith H M Dockyard. Presumably his age was really 66.

It appears that the name Trevan has died out as a surname on this branch although Trevan John Cocking (1969-) still keeps the name alive as a first name.

Henry Meirs Trevan junior died on 28 Jul 1926 at the Charlton Nursing Home, Plymouth. His widow died in Callington on 30 Oct 1935.

Daisy Chapman nee Trevan (1893- before 1999)

Daisy Kate Trevan was born in Stoke Damerel in 4Q1893. The information about Daisy Chapman nee Trevan was provided by Trevan Cocking on 5 Jan 2000 from his Grandpapa who attended her funeral.

Daisy Kate Trevan was born in the last quarter of 1893 in Stoke Damerel. She was apparently a smart but haughty woman, beautifully dressed. She married a Gilbert Chapman in 2Q1920 in the Plympton registration district. He was a master tailor with his own business and they lived on Peverell Park Rd, (Plymouth). Until the first war Daisy had a maid called Mary. Mary served in the forces during the conflict and returned to Daisy as a companion. When Daisy died Mary married but died less than a year later. Daisy and Gilbert had no children.

Winifred Dora Lucas nee Trevan (1895-)

The birth of Winifred Dora Trevan was registered in Stoke Damerel in 1Q1896. Trevan Cocking also provided the following about Winifred Dora Lucas nee Trevan. She married a Mr Lucas in 2Q1924 in the Plympton registration district. He owned the gasworks at or near Torpoint. They made a packet when it was nationalised. They had one daughter called Joy Lucas who married James Thatcher. They live in Rickmansworth in Hertfordshire and have no children. When Mr Lucas died Winifred moved in with her sister Daisy.
