Brief Description

James Henry Trevan was born on 12 Sep 1859 and baptised at Charles Church, Plymouth on 16 Oct 1859. The family were living at 6 Looe St at the time. He was at home with his parents for the 1861 and 1871 censuses, but had left home and was visiting his father's cousin Henry Henwood Trevan in St Pancras, London at the time of the 1881 census when he was described as a "Carpenter Ship".

He married in Plymouth at the start of 1884 to Grace Moyse. Their son Edgar was born on 2 Nov 1884 when their address was 13 Summerland Street, Plymouth and he was described as a carpenter.

It seems that Edgar used the surname Trevan-Hawke in later life, and he died in 1946, aged 61.

James died in the Penzance Registration District the year after he married in Plymouth; according to Boase, he was Clerk of Works at the building of Newlyn Pier, where he fell from a platform on to the docks and fractured his skull. His death certificate records that he died on 3 Sept when his address was given as Regent Street, Penzance. He was recorded as leaving a wife and 2 children, but research to date has only found one of them. (Boase incorrectly gives his father as John Henry Trevan, but there is no-one with that name!) According to great great granddaughter Judith Trevan-Hawke there is alledgedly a memorial plaque on the wall of Newlyn pier, and alledgedly he was not sober at the time of the accident!

Some time after James's death Grace married a second cousin, John Moyse-Hawke, but since her maiden name had been Moyse she dropped it. At the time of the 1891 Census she was living with her father at 4 Devonshire Street in Plymouth. John M Hawke was lodging with them so presumably he was her future second husband. Her son Edgar was baptised as Edgar Trevan, but his marriage was under both the name Edgar Trevan and also Edgar Trevan-Hawke. All his descendents used the name Trevan-Hawke.

Presumably her father died several years later since the Plymouth directories list Mrs Grace Trevan as living at 4 Devonshire Street from 1897-1914.
