Brief Description of the Family

John was the second son of John Trevan and Rachel nee Northcott. The US Social Security Death records and his funeral announcement show that he was born on 3 Dec 1877. He was aged about 5 when his father, also John, was drowned at sea.

At the time of the 1901 census his elder brother Will had already left the area for Fulham, where he was working as a carpenter and joiner. John and younger brother Sampson were working as Clay Cask Cookers. Sampson left the area for Lee Moor in Devon by 1904.

In 1908, aged 30, he left St Austell in April to start a new life in Canada. En route he tried to arrange to meet with his elder brother Will in Fulham as he travelled to Liverpool to take the to Montreal on 16th April. From a he wrote on 14 March 1908, work was slack in the St Austell area. He could not have stayed in Canada for long before moving on firstly Pennsylvania where he was granted his citizenship also in 1908. Presumably this was because it was either cheaper or easier to immigrate through Canada than directly to the USA. He could not have stayed there long since he moved to Michigan in the USA where he met and married Gertrude Shales on 9 Sep 1908. She had been born there. They sent a card to the family back in Cornwall which read

Married Wednesday, September ninth, 1908.

By the time that 3rd child Harold was born in 1913 the family was living in Flint, Michigan. The family then moved to Mancelona, Michigan in the remote northern part of the lower peninsula. While Harold was a teenager the family moved to Greenville.

He died in St. Joseph Hospital, Ann Arbor, Michigan. Shortly before that he was living with his daughters Mabel and Marion in Wyoming, Michigan - a suburb of Grand Rapids. His funeral announcement gives his date of birth as December 3, 1877 in Cornwall, England and he passed away March 1, 1964 at Grand Rapids, Michigan. Among the pallbearers were 3 of his grandsons William Trevan, Marvin Trevan and Robert Trevan who are Ernest's sons. Gertrude died in Greenville, Michigan.
