Betsey Alicia Trevan
(1762-1794) who married Ralph Clark on 23 Jun 1784 in Stoke Damerel
Matthew Trevan (1763-1809) who married Ann Bake on 4 Jan 1782 at St Teath
Frances Trevan (1765- after 1794) who married John Copeland on 17 Oct 1783 in Stoke Damerel when she was still a minor
He was the Purser on the Rattlesnake, and probable founder of the Navy List.
They had at least 1 son, John, who is referred to in Ralph Clark's letters
Mary Ann Trevan (1767- after 1794) who married Richard Wills on 28 Jun 1792 at St George, East Stonehouse
John Archer Trevan (1769-1851) who married Ann Watts on 28 Nov 1797 at St Endellion
Jemima Trevan (c1770/1- ) who married John Hooker on 27 May 1792 at St George, East Stonehouse
Second marriage: Catherine Hosegood, 13 Jul 1784 at Stoke Damerel
Matthew was born in St Germans where he was baptised on 18 Jun 1732.
He married Elizabeth Stephens, also of St Germans, but I have been unable to find where and when.
He was a yeoman and moved to Devon and rented properties in several parishes, including Eggbuckland and St Budeaux. The date at which he moved is unknown but he was living, like most Cornish families who moved to the Plymouth area, in Stoke Damerel by 1757 when his eldest known son was baptised.
From this point onwards he appears to have lived in the following parishes.
the parish of Stoke Damerel where his eldest known child Thomas was baptised on 12 Nov 1757
the parish of St Germans in South East Cornwall where Thomas was buried, aged 1/2 on 14 Apr 1758
then back to Stoke Damerel where Elizabeth was baptised on 25 Feb 1760 and where on 24 Jun 1760 Matthew leased 11 St Aubyn Street, East Side
the parish of St Teath in North East Cornwall where daughter Elizabeth was buried on 26 Oct 1761 and daughter Betsy Alicia was baptised on 28 Feb 1762. Later son Matthew returned to St Teath to marry Ann Bake on 4 Jan 1782 and subsequently live there. Maybe wife Elizabeth moved there for her 3rd confinement leaving husband Matthew living and working on the outskirts of the town of Plymouth.
then back to Stoke Damerel where more children were baptised (Matthew on 2 Sep 1763; Frances on 6 Jun 1765) and then to the area of the modern A38 from the Marsh Mills roundabout to the Saltash bridge!
Pennycross where Mary Ann was baptised on 9 Jun 1767
in the early 1780's the Trevan family used the church at Stoke Damerel for 3 marriages in 1783 and 1784
then to St Budeaux where their youngest two children were baptised (John Archer Trevan on 18 Jun 1769 and Jemima on 5 Jan 1771) and where Matthew was a witness to 2 marriages in 1771 (James Puddicombe, gentleman from the parish of Woolborough in Devon to Mrs Elizabeth Pendle of St Budeaux) and 1773 (Joseph Opey to Elizabeth Tolley).
There are separate pages which give a brief description of him and his siblings as children in St Germans, and another which follows their tracks through this region of Devon.
His wife Elizabeth died before he did, and he remarried in 1784 in Stoke Damerel.
He died 2 years later and was buried at Eggbuckland. Although he was a yeoman I have been unable to find any trace that a will existed.
Unfortunately the wills for the Totnes Archdeaconery were among the records which were destroyed in WWII when an incendiary bomb hit the building where many of the Devon records were being stored.
After Matthew's death Catherine fell foul of the law and at the Devon Quarter
Sessions for Michaelmas 1791 was fined 20 pounds to keep the peace towards
James Boutcher & wife Mary. (QS 1/21 p322; QS 1/22 p2)
In Collectanae Cornubiensia written by G.C.Boase and published in 1890, the entry for Matthew reads as follows.
TREVAN, MATHHEW (son of Matthew Trevan of Efford manor Egg-Buckland, and Swilley, Stoke Damarell both in Devon) b1733 d1786 m Elizabeth Stephens of St Germans, and had issue 6 children, Matthew; Betsey Alicia; Frances; Mary Ann; John Archer of whom below; and Jemima
Note: There is no baptism of Matthew Trevan to be found in the Eggbuckland parish registers. In my opinion Matthew's father is incorrect here since my research shows that he too was born and baptised in St Germans on 18 Jun 1732 as Matthew Trevaine son of John and Francis
Jemima Trevan was baptised on 5 Jan 1771 at St Budeaux, Plymouth. She married John Hooker on 27 May 1792 at St George, East Stonehouse. John had at least 7 children, but how many were by Jemima and the order is uncertain. It seems probable that he married twice, although it is also possible he married three times.
His children from his first marriage to Elizabeth Fishley on 4 Apr 1775 at Stoke Damerel were
Elizabeth Hooker (1776-), baptised 25 Mar 1776 at Princes Street Independent, Devonport
John Hooker (1777 - after 1857), referred to in Matthew's will, baptised 5 May 1777 at Princes Street Independent, Devonport
Children (from Matthew's will):
William Hooker (1780 - before 1857), referred to in Matthew's will, baptised 1 Dec 1780 at Stoke Damerel who married Eleanor Dorward at Plymouth St Charles on 16 Feb 1821. Eleanor had been married before to Henry Dorward and they had a daughter Eliza Mann Dorward - bpt 27 Feb 1814 (according to a descendent, Michelle Fry Rooney). Eliza married William Fry who was a Royal Marine.
Child (from Matthew's will):
Ellen Hooker who married Thomas Salmon 18847Q4 in Stoke Damerel registration district. Eliza's youngest daughter Elizabeth Fry (c1855/6-) was living with them Islington at the time of the 1871 census (Source: Michelle Fry Rooney)
Ann Hooker (1785 - before 1857), baptised 25 Nov 1785 at Princes Street Independent, Devonport, who married Mark Blamey, a Sergeant in the Royal Marines, on 4 June 1807 when Mark was aged 28,
referred to in Matthew's will
Children (from Matthew's will):
Ann Blamey (1813-99), bpt 11 Apr 1813 at Stoke Damerel parish church, who married William Lineaman on 12 Sep 1833 at Charles Church, Plymouth and died in 1899 in Penge, Surrey. Their children inclued James Trevan Lineaman b1846.
Elizabeth Blamey who married Mr Ashby before 1857
Mother unknown, but mentioned in the 1857 will
George Hooker (- after 1857), referred to in Matthew's will as residing in Stonehouse, near Plymouth
Children (from Matthew's will):
George Hooker
Elizabeth Hooker who married Mr Widyn before 1857
Richard Hooker
From his marriage with Jemima
Matthew Trevan Hooker (1793-1857), bpt Stoke Damerel, who married Sara Elizabeth and died in Islington in Oct / Nov 1857, leaving a will mentioning many family members.
Richard Hooker (1795-1818), bpt Stoke Damerel who died or was buried on 21 Jan 1818 according to research done by Shirley Carpenter, who also provided much of the information about the Hooker family, notably the information from Matthew Trevan Hooker's will and other information not available from the online IGI.
Matthew and Elizabeth were dead long before the 1841 census.
Catherine's date of birth is unknown and so far neither her death nor
her 1841 census data have been found.
Matthew was involved in a court case over lack of maintenance of a
ditch by the toll road at Longbridge, on the outskirts of Eggbuckland.
At the West Devon Record Office map referenced
81/X61 shows the land
which he rented from Sir Harry Trelawney, Baronet, in the parish of Eggbuckland, who coincidentally was the owner of the land which Matthew "possessed" in St Budeaux at the time of his advertisement in the Sherborne and Mercury.
No will has been found for Matthew or either of his wives.
Matthew Trevan Hooker, son of John and Jemima Hooker nee Trevan, left a will in 1857 in which he leaves inheritances to mostly his Hooker relatives but also to his 1st cousin once removed the Reverend Matthew Trevan Male, son of Mary Ann Male nee Trevan who was daughter of Jemima's eldest brother Matthew. In addition to many of the Hooker's shown at the top of this file, there are also legacies to his nephew John Hooker and his children Harriet Ann Hooker and Susan Ellen Hooker. They are possibly descended from Matthew's late brother William, but the will does not make it clear who John's father is or was in 1857.
Books:
The family is mentioned in at least two books.
Collectanae Cornubiensia, by G.C. Boase 1890

Hamley and Hambly Family, by Edmund Hambly c1930's?
(copy at the Society of Genealogists, London)
Letters:
25 Jan 1773 edition of the Sherborne Mercury:
There is a letter from Samson Grills dated 19 Jan that mentions Matthew Trevan among several others
5 Sep 1774 edition of the Sherborne Mercury:
There is an advert of Budshead Farm in St Budeaux for rent from Matthew Trevan
4 & 11 May 1778 editions of the Sherborne Mercury:
There is an advert of
wood for sale at Great Efford which mentions Matthew Trevan
Notes:
The IGI shows a Matthew Trevan Gedge baptised at Old Buckenham, Norfolk on 11 Apr 1859 and another with the same names on 9 Mar 1867, sons of George Gedge and Maria Calver. How they are related is unknown, but since all the known pre-1980's Matthew Trevan's are descendent of this Matthew and Elizabeth Trevan I have made a note of them here so that the information does not get lost.
Possibly they knew John and Susannah Smith nee Trevan who married at St Budeaux in 1761.
Peter and Anne Stephens, Matthew's sister and her family
both lived at St. Budeaux 1769-1771 and probably until 1774.
Sampson and Frances, Matthew's brother and his family
