How to Tell if the Frames Version Will Work
If the next sentence includes a date in red inside the brackets / parentheses
(in the American month/day/year format)
then you should be able to read the Frames version without problem.
If not, it's a case of try it and see what happens :o)
At the time of writing (
) my various email
addresses are, in order of preference
- mary.trevan@wxs.nl
- which I use when I am in the Netherlands
and check once a week or so when I'm in France or England
- mary.trevan@geocities.com
- which I currently have diverted to
mary.trevan@wxs.nl
- mary.trevan@hotmail.com
- which I use as my address when I'm in
the UK, but otherwise don't check very often because it doesn't let
me save the emails on my local machine! (A major disadvantage in my opinion)
Why Write a Frames Version at All?
These pages were originally written as a non-frames version
with links between them. However, over time, a few things started to
become irritating.
- Time to write - By the time that the number of pages
exceeded 100, the time writing the pages to
index them all started to become more time consuming
than writing the pages in the first place.
- Time to find
- I found I had changed the links and some pages had no route
to them, or I could not find the route to them, even though I knew they
were there somewhere!
- Wanting to see things side by side
- When I started to add the photos, I found it annoying that
I could only see one at a time, and not show father and son side by side
to try to see any family likeness.
- Finding what is only on my local machine
- I went through a phase when I had problems getting or keeping a
connection to my ISP, and got confused about which files I had
prepared on my local computer but had not yet uploaded to my web site.
So I wanted to put dates at the bottom of each page.
- Ease of changing contact details
- My job took me from working in the Netherlands to working in France,
and I found I needed to change my contact address on EVERY page on my web site!
By moving the contact details to the Frame and not each page it's a lot
less work to change, especially as my time in France
is likely to be less than 1 year and then I'll want to change it again!
Why Keep a Non-Frames Version Too?
Getting a little technical,
you need a browser like Microsoft Internet Explorer v4 or newer,
or Netscape v3 or newer for Frames support. At the same time I added
the Frames version I started putting in the buttons and using a language
called JavaScript to open the windows and also to show the date at
which I uploaded each file to my web site.
If you're new to the web and using a newish computer you'll have no
problems reading the Frames version. But if you are running Netscape v2
because you're still using MS Windows
(i.e. you did not move to Windows 95, 98 or 2000)
or if you're running from Linux because you don't like Microsoft's
near monopoly situation
then don't try the Frames versions or the buttons.
