Early References to Skelton

The most famous early Skelton was John, a renaissence period poet, who lived in the 15th century.

Elizabeth Treliving nee Skelton 16xx-1685

My interest in the name Skelton is to find any ancestors or siblings to Elizabeth Skelton who married William Treliving at St. Stephens, Saltash, Cornwall on 27th August 1633. She was buried at Landulph, Cornwall on 31st March 1685.

Landulph lies in South East Cornwall on the western bank of the River Tamar.

Other Skelton's in the parish of Landulph include John, later Sir John, who was born in 1613 and married Bridgett Prideaux from near Crediton in 1640. His family is believed to have originated from Cumberland. It is thought that he went from Landulph to Stoketon Manor and then to Holland with Charles II. However there is no evidence to link Elizabeth to this John, other than the circumstantial evidence of the same name in a parish within the same century.

There is a Skelton Park in the parish of Landulph with deeds dating from 1426.
