Treliving Family History

The name Treliving is a variant of Treleaven, and almost all of the Treliving's are descended from one couple, William Treliving and Elizabeth Skelton, who married in 1633 at St.Stephens by Saltash, Cornwall, England.

There is an official GOON (Guild of One Name Studies) for the name Treleaven / Treleven / Treliving. All that I can find on-line is the postal address of who to contact.

Lynne Browning was the driving force behind a collection of her relatives in producing a limited edition private publication entitled "Treliving Family History" which was published in 3 books in 1995. Distaff relations wishing to make contact or Trelivings with new information may contact Lynne on Browning.ETF@btinternet.com. Her mother's maiden name was Treliving.

The books have the purported Treliving coat of arms on the front cover.

There are several other people researching the Treliving family, but few have web pages. One who does is Don Auckram.

William Treliving (d1641) and Elizabeth Skelton (d1668)

Over a period of 360 years and 13 generations this couple have been traced to 779 (in 1995) descendents named Treliving.

The ninth generation was the most populous at 206, with dates of birth spanning the years from 1880 to 1957.

At the time of publication there were 257 Trelivings alive who are covered by the book.

I am a 12th generation descendent, from a marriage in 1828 at the 7th generation between an Honor Treliving (1803-1879) and John Trevan (1805-1862), making me a 5th cousin once removed from Lynne. The list below shows only my direct line.

They lived in St Mellion where he was a yeoman and an active member of the Church, as was often the case with the Yeoman class, and he was Overseer of the Poor in 1740. His children were baptized in St Mellion

John Treliving (1711-1780) married Jane Oliver of St Germans on 12 Oct 1746 at St. Mellion. He was described as "John Treliving". Following their marriage they stayed in St Mellion for a few years before moving to Sheviock, a parish close to St Germans. While in St Mellion he followed in his father's footsteps and was active within the Church. He signed the Vestry minutes with the spelling of John Treliving, starting in the year that his father died. His signature also appears on the Constable's Charges and Overseers of the Poor accounts. He and his brother William were joint executors of his father's will.

There are also references to this John Treliving to be found in the Churchwarden's Accounts for Sheviock in 1755 (Cornwall Record Office, DDP/208/5/1) and in the Chancery Proceedings at the PRO for c1758 (PRO Chancery Lane E134/32 Geo II Mich 4). It appears that somewhere between 1755 and 1758 he returned to St Mellion, possibly upon the resolution of the disputed property of Cow Park in the parish of St Mellion, which was the subject of the dispute in the Chancery Proceedings. His wife Jane was buried in St Mellion on 27 Apr 1758. His signature appears in the Vestry Minutes for St Mellion in 1766/7 and on 27 Mar 1769. He too was buried in St Mellion on 18 Nov 1780.
