Brief Description of the Family

He was baptised in Blisland on 31 May 1854, son of Anne Trevains. No father's name was recorded.

From the details of his marriage as recorded in the Bolventor parish register, he was a miner aged 21 when he married Eliza Harper, daughter of John, when she was age 18. Their eldest child, Thomas, was born in Temple, according to the 1881 census. Their second child, Mary, was not at home for the 1881 census, but was for the 1891 census. Her place of birth is recorded as Alternun.

The 1881 census describes him as a China Clay labourer. The parish register entries show that after being a labourer he became an engine fitter at during the time that the family lived in Mill Lane, approx 1889-1891.

The 1881 census also shows that the family was quite mobile, which was typical for miners, since son Thomas was born in Temple and daughter Rosa was born in Blisland. Benjamin's place of birth was also given as Temple. Eliza was described as born in Alternun.

After having their 3rd child baptised as Rose in Bolventor they moved to nearby St Breward where they had her baptised again as Rosa Bilkey Trevains and where several of their other children were baptised. Of course, maybe they were 2 different daughters and the death and burial information for the first has not been found. The 1891 census names her as Rosie, age 9, born in Temple. However, it seems that accuracy was not a strong trait in this family, since in 1891 census, Thomas Trevain was a 17 year old farm servant at Hill Farm, St Breward, with William Philp. Thomas's place of birth was given as Bolventor.

John died in the Plymouth registration district, age 49 in 4Q1903. Presumably he moved there to be near son Thomas.

It seems most likely that when Eliza died her age was reported incorrectly. The death recorded as Eliza J Trevains, age 76, in the Bodmin registration area in 1Q1937 is taken to be hers.
