Brief Description of the Family
John was baptised at Blisland on 29 Jan 1788, son of John and Sarah Treveans.
Both John and Elizabeth made their marks at the time of their wedding on 8 Jan 1814, also in Blisland, indicating that they were illiterate. In spite of that John worked his way up from being a labourer to a yeoman at the time he was buried age 55 their on 2 Oct 1842.
Along the way he became a higler (a travelling salesman who sells goods from his horse and cart), then a carrier, then a farmer.
In the directory for Cornwall in 1832 he was advertising himself as John Trevein, carrier of St Mabben, from the New Inn every Saturday.
He achieved farmer status by the time of his daughter Eliza's marriage in 1856, by which time his son John could sign his name. She was living at The Parsonage in Bolventer at the time of the marriage.
His baptism was recorded under the spelling of Treveans, and his marriage and the baptisms of all his children was under the spelling Trevaynes.
There are letters of administration dated 22 Jun 1850 for John Trevain, yeoman of Blisland, died 2 Oct 1842 whose wife was Elizabeth, but I have not yet looked at them. He was buried a week later on 9 Oct 1842. Elizabeth was also buried in Blisland, age 70, on 22 May 1856.
Joh and Elizabeth had 5 daughters and only 1 known son, John, for whom no marriage or children have been found. So it is believed that the name Trevains has died out on this branch.
Elizabeth was baptised on 27 Feb 1815 in Blisland. It appears likely that she and her sister Jane moved to the Portsmouth area where they married. Elizabeth Trevain married in P.I. during 4Q1843.
Ann was baptised on 19 Jan 1816 (IGI says 1817) in Blisland where she later married Thomas Prout on 29 Jan 1838. At the time her address was given as Treworder and her father was described as a farmer. Thomas was described as a labourer of Redruth, son of John Prout, labourer. Their witnesses were Ralph Rogers and John Emmett.
I can find neither Ann nor Thomas in the 1881 census.
Jane was baptised on 11 Apr 1819 in Blisland. It appears likely that she and her sister Jane moved to the Portsmouth area where they married. Jane Trevanagh married in P.I. during 4Q1838.
Kitty was baptised on 6 Jan 1822 in Blisland where she later married John Axworthy on 10 Jun 1843. At the time he was described as a bachelor and shoemaker of Church Bridge. His father was described as John Axworthy, labourer. Their witnesses were John Hooken (Hosken?) and John Best. They stayed in the parish and on the night of the 1851 census her brother John was staying with them at Waterloo in Blisland. At the time of the 1871 census they were living in Blisland and an Eliza Weamouth, a 24 year old married dressmaker born in Morristown (Maurice Town, Devonport) was visiting them.
Their known children:
- John Axworthy (c1844/5-) who married Elizabeth Lander, daughter of Christopher and Ann Lander
Their known children are, from the 1881 census:
- Henrietta Axworthy (c1869/70-) born in St Teath
- Herbert Axworthy (c1872/3-) born in St Teath
- Leonetta Axworthy (c1874/5-) born in Bodmin
- Christopher Axworthy (c1876/7-) born in Bodmin
- Marwood Axworthy (c1845/6-)
- Eliza Axworthy (c1848/9-)
- Thererso / Theresa Axworthy (c1849/50-)
- Martin Axworthy (c1853/4-) who married Annie
Their known child from the 1881 census:
- Irene K. A. Axworthy born cJan 1881 at St Stephens
- Austin Axworthy (c1859/60-), cordwainer
- Edgar Axworthy (c1864/5-)
By the time of the 1881 census only the youngest 2 children were still living at home with their parents and 1 servant.
John received a legacy of 75 pounds in Adolphus Trevan's will in 1887. Since John and Kitty's eldest son John was also a Cordwainer living in Blisland, it is not clear whether this was John senior or John junior. SInce John junior had lived in St Teath, maybe it is more likely that it was him.
Eliza was baptised on 22 Feb 1826 in Blisland. She married John Barber, a tinner, in Bolventor on 16 Aug 1856. At the time her address was given as The Parsonage and her father was described as a farmer. The parish register gives her name as Elizabeth, but the civil registration records give her name as Eliza. After their marriage the family moved to Alternun, which was John's parish, where they were living at the time of the 1871 census and 1881 census.
Their known children are
- John Barber (c1858/9-)
- Elizabeth Ann Barber (c1861/2-)
- Eliza Jane Barber (c1868/9-)
John was baptised in Blisland on 22 May 1828. At the time of the 1851 census he was living with his sister Kitty, who by then had married John Axworthy who was a shoemaker. John Trevains was described as a shoemaker's apprentice. He was a witness to his sister Eliza's marriage in Bolventor in 1856, where he signed his name. At the time of the 1881 census he was unmarried and boarding with Joseph Axworthy in St Neot. I have not yet researched how Joseph Axworthy was related to his brother-in-law John Axworthy. His death was recorded between Apr and Jun 1884 in the Liskeard registration district.
