Goat's Head Soup

The First Stonesalbum I bought myself was Goat's Head Soup. This was after I "found" GImme Shelter in my sister's record collection. Since then Goat's Head Soup is for me one of the better Stones albums. An album where especially Mick Taylor let's him self go with some fabulous guitar solo's, Mick uses his voice with passion, Keith and Charlie deliver some fantastic rhythm (Keith plays a lot of Bass on the album). And listen to STU playing great piano on Silver Train. Bill Wyman is terrific on some songs but not present on others.

After the fabulous album series of Beggar's Banquet, Let it Bleed, Sticky Fingers and Exile on Mainstreet, in 1973 they release Goat's Head Soup. The album is recorded during sessions in Jamaica, 1972 and in London, 1973. At that moment the Stones and specifically Keith Richards are outcasts because of their excessive drugsabuse.
Keith lives in Switserland at this time because no other country wants him, and he gets more and more isolated from the rest of the band. Briefly before the recordingsessions he bought a house in Jamaica and doing so he built up connections with some Jamaican musicians. Keith is the drinving force behind the recordingsessions. The whole album reflects the humid atmosphere of the Jamaican climate.
The drugabuse takes its toll during the recording-sessions: Jimmy Miller, Andy Johns, Bobby Keys all drop out during recordings. It's to be Jimmy Miller's last Stones-album. Keith's says: "Jimmy Miller went in a lion and came out a lamb. We wore him out completely... "
Keith also thinks it has become an album of 'sidemen': "The problem (with the Stones' mid-70s albums), which I was ignorant of for a long time, was studio musicians and sidemen taking over the band. The real problem with those albums was the band was led astray by brilliant players like Billy Preston. We'd start off a typical Stones track and Billy would start playing something so fuckin' good musically that we'd get sidetracked and end up with a compromised track. THAT made the difference." (Keith 1983).

 7/10  DANCING WITH MR.D.  
"Lovely up-tempo bluesy tune with Mick Taylor playing the song together. The songs has voodoo influences as Mick Jagger sings "Well, down in the graveyard where we have our tryst . The air smells sweet, the air smells sick "

   7/10  100 YEARS AGO  
"Mick Taylor at his best. Billy Preston playing clavinet. It all starts quite relaxed, nut after "Call me Lazy Bones" it ends in a great jam wishing you were a 'fly on the wall'."

 9/10  COMING DOWN AGAIN  
" One og Keith’s (sung by him, that is...) best ballads so far. Keith's 'confession' to Anita that he is also in for other women: "stick my tongue in someone else’s pie". A beautiful slow harmony of piano, Keith's guitar, Mick Taylor on bass and Bobby Keys closing the song with a sexy sax-solo.

 9/10 DOO DOO DOO DOO DOO (HEARTBREAKER)
Een van de betere nummers van dit album en behoort dan ook tot de Stonesklassiekers voor mij. Mooi gebruik van de blazerssectie. Een hele goeie live versie staat op het legendarische Nasty Music/Brussels Affair).

10/10 ANGIE
Deze ballad zal nooit meer door de Stones worden overtroffen. Ik zal deze niet meer zoveel uit mijzelf spelen omdat ik m al zo vaak heb gehoord. Maar elke keer als ik m weer hoor verbaas ik me over de perfectie van deze song. Is terecht een all-time classic. Heeft ook vele Stones-fans gecreerd die niet wisten wat de Stones nog meer voor muziek maakten. Om KR te citeren: “It brought us an audience that would not normally touch us with barge pole!” Atlantic wilde Angie eerst niet als single uitbrengen maar wilde een Brown Sugar achtig nummer als single.

7/10 SILVER TRAIN
OK je zit in de auto en je draait Silver Train. Kijk uit want voordat je het weet ga je over de snelheidslimiet heen.
Oorspronkelijk was dit nummer geschreven voor Johnny Winter. Het is een heerlijk ‘relaxte’ rocker. Gewoon een goed nummer; Luister naar STU op piano! 

 7/10 HIDE YOUR LOVE
Een prachtige pianoblues van Mick.Keith speelt hierop niet mee. Mick Taylor produceert echter weer een van zijn trade-mark solo’s !!

9/10 WINTER
Een erg onderschat nummer. Mick Taylor op zijn best. Met name op het eind een bijna 'huilend' nummer. Ik vind het heerlijk om dit nummer met koptelefoon op te luisteren en dan lekker weg te mijmeren. Alhoewel dit nummer geen echte blues is creert het wel een echt bluesgevoel. Is nooit live gespeeld, maar dat zal ook moeilijk zijn zonder Mick Taylor) .

7/10 CAN YOU HEAR THE MUSIC
Apart nummer zoals de Stones er af en toe wel meer maken in de trant van Moonlight Mile, Continental Drift. Behoort niet to mijn favoriete muziek (met uitzondering van Moonlight Mile) maar is zeker goed uitgevoerd. 

7/10 STAR STAR
Goeie rocker in de trant van Chuck Berry. Stevige meezinger op live concerten. Controversieel door de soms stevige teksten over 'groupies'. De originele titel was Starfucker, maar is door de censuur veranderd in Star Star. In de lyrics werd het woord Starbucker geprint. In de USA werd de regel "I bet you keep your pussy clean" verwijderd. Atlantic wilde eerst een geschreven toestemming van Steve McQueen voordat ze de regel "giving head to Steve McQueen" goedkeurden (die dat uieraard deed met de opmerking 'bedankt voor de gratis publiciteit')
