AVERNO OBSCULUM
Interview March 2005 with Roel

1- GIVE ME INFO ABOUT THE NAME OF THE BAND?
Delphian is a progressive metal-band from the south of Holland. Its history began in the summer of 2000, when Coert Bouten (guitar) and Roel van Helden (drums) decided to form a new band. After countless musicians coming and going, the band was completed with guitarist Marcel Volleberg, bassist Sjoerd Hoeijmakers and female vocalist Aniek Janssen. With members having played in bands like Exile (Metal), Dvplo (Death/Punk), Phlegmatic (Alternative Rock) and Sin (Poprock) they have found their sound in the form of Delphian.
Since Nov 2003 Delphian has been playing live shows, with as a highlight their show at the “Rockweekend” festival where they played for a massive crowd together with bands like Within Temptation and lots of others.
Their first studio-recordings were made in Jan/Feb 2004 and can be found on their untitled promotional CD, which contains 5 songs. Also some mp3-samples can be downloaded at their website.
Delphian is currently (end of 2004) recording their debut-album, which will be released by Finnish -Power Metal, Hard Rock, Progressive and guitar music-label Lion Music.

2- YOUR INFLUENCES ARE?
Delphian’s musical style can be described as melodic metal with progressive elements, from fast and aggressive songs to acoustic ballads. Influences include technical elements of bands like Dream Theater and the melodic, yet heavy songs from Nevermore and Opeth. Because of the long period of completing the band, the songs became very well thought-through with dynamic and complex rhythms completed with melodic guitar riffs, pure female vocals and the flute playing of singer Aniek.

3- DO YOU PRACTICE SOME KIND OF RITUALS AFTER YOUR SHOWS?
Yes, we break down our backline, and put our stuff in the van. This is a very intense and emotional experience for us. We have a drum-flight case which is so heavy that some people seem to believe there’s a dead bodie in there (but there usually isn’t).
Then we consume our drink-coupons we got from the venue, and of course try to score with some groupies (which always fails by the way, I think we are too sexy….so sexy it hurts). When the night is over we shake each others hands and go home. Sometimes we even stop at a gas-station to get some drinks and food.

4- COMENT ABOUT YOUR LAST CD ALBUM AND THE LABEL WHO RELEASES?
It’s going to contain 10 tracks and will be approximately 55 minutes long. We have written 14 songs since we started as a band and recorded the 10 songs we thought of as our best material. The album will probably be released in June 2005 and the label is Lion Music; a Finnish label which specialises in hard-, progressive- and melodic rock/metal.

5- AND HOW MANY COPIES DO IT?
The first release will be a 1000 copys, once these are sold there will be made more.

6- ARE YOU SATANISM?
Yes, we are very Satanism! We even have Beëlzebub himself sometimes as a crewmember. He is a very nice dude and what people say about him is all based on prejudice. Just because someone is red and has a tail and lives in the underworld doesn’t make him a bad person.

7- ARE YOU KNOW SOME BANDS FROM PERU AND THE SCENE FROM SOUTH AMERICA?
I can’t actually name any band from Peru. And the only bands from South America I can think of are Sepultura and Krisiun.

8- FUTURE PLANS OF THE BAND?
We want to make more albums and play live a lot, it’s cliché, I know.

9- GIVE ME SOME INFO ABOUT YOUR CONCERTS?
We try to make a good active live show with lots of headbanging, running around and making a face like it’s really difficult what you are playing. But we don’t use any show attributes like fireworks or Eddie’s coming on stage etc.

10- YOUR LAST COMENT TO THE WARRIORS OF THE AVERNO OBSCULUM ZINE ?
