The Berthout (Berthold) family were lords of Grimbergen and powerful vassals of the Dukes of Brabant. Like other feudal families, they were always looking for opportunities to increase their possessions and influence, even at the expense of their overlord. Duke Godfried III was still an infant when his father died in 1042, which gave the Berthout family the opportunity to declare themselves free from the Duke's control. But with the support of the German Emperor, Godfried waged war on his rebellious vassals and won. Later, the Berthout family and the Duke's family were connected through family ties, and Wouter "The Great" (1243 -1296), who was married to a niece of Duke Hendrik III even became a Regent for the Duchy after the death of Hendrik III. The last male Berthout was Floris Berthout of Mechelen (1310-1331).
