AD 920?-1250?

Van Cuijk (also Van Kuijc, Van Kuyc, and Van Kuik)
(Arnsberg, Cappenberg, Drenthe, the Kempengouw, Malsen, Teisterbant, Utrecht, Werl)

For younger generations of ancestors who are descended from this family:
see page on Saffenberg
see page on Holland
see page on Van Heusden

Most information on this family was provided by Jan Willem Boezeman and Dave Pol. Their information seems to be in accordance with the book "De heren van Kuyc 1096-1400" by dr. J.A. Coldeweij, which included the hypothetical ancestry of Henderik I, "heer" van Cuijk, Viscount of Utrecht. At the moment, the family relationship between Henderik I and Aleijd van Cuijk, the wife of Jan van Heusden, is not known.

(4 times our ancestor, blood-relationship .. %)
* ? x Ida of Boulogne (1070?) +
Herman, "heer" (lord) of Malsen (now Geldermalsen), was the first to use the name Van Kuijc after apparently having been appointed "heer" of the area around the town of Cuijk, south-east of Nijmegen, by Emperor Heinrich IV in 1096 or earlier. Cuijk, situated where an important trade route crossed the river Rhine, became the family's main property until its castle was destroyed in 1133.

Godfried I, "heer" van Cuijk, Count of Werl-Arnsberg
(4 times our ancestor, blood-relationship .. %)
* 1100? x Ida / Sophia of Werl-Arnsberg (1128?) + 1167?
Godfried apparently became Count of Werl-Arnsberg (in Westphalia, Germany) through his wife. In 1133 Godfried and his brother Herman seem to have murdered Floris "The Black", the brother of Count Dirk VI of Holland, who had first tried in vain to depose Count Dirk, and then - just before his own violent death - had succeeded in taking political power in Utrecht away from Bishop of Andries van Kuik. According to the website of the Cuijk Archiefdienst after this murder the lands around Cuijk were ransacked, the castle was completely destroyed on orders from Count Dirk and the Emperor, and Godfried and Herman themselves were banished. This seems strange, since Floris "The Black" had been a very dangerous rival to his brother Dirk VI, the German Emperor Lotharius III was the Count's brother-in-law, Bishop Andries of Utrecht was a true vassal of the German Emperor, and Godfried's daughter Alveradis later married Count Dirk's son Otto IV, Count of Bentheim, see below. Another source, "Nijhoffs Geschiedenis-lexicon" by H.W.J. Volmuller, gives another explanation: Floris "The Black" had started an affair with Heilwiva, Count Godfried's rich niece. Her Van Cuijk uncles were very much opposed to this liaison, and in the ensueing feud, Floris was killed.
