Like many more known families in our tree, the origins of the Holsters are in "het Land van Altena", east of Dordrecht and south of Gorinchem, see map. The name Holster is derived from a knapsack or the holster of a pistol. New information on this family was kindly provided by Dave Pol, visit his homepage.

Nothing is known about this family's founding father, who apparently did not use the name Holster himself. He might have been a soldier or a merchant, usually carrying a "holster".

Occupation: farmer at the "brugdam" in Emmickhoven, "heemraad van Emmickhoven and Waardhuizen" in 1621, "collecteur der verpondingen" and "secretaris" of Almkerk, Emmickhoven and Waardhuizen. He got himself into financial troubles, the "baljuw" of Woudrichem started judicial proceedings against Bastiaen in 1644. He died not long afterwards.

Occupation: farmer, as well as "secretaris" of Almkerk, Emmickhoven and Waardhuizen, "schout" of Almkerk, "waarsman van Santwijk" and "hoge waarsman der Zeven Bannen". He received his training from "notaris" Jan Mercelis van Osch in Gorinchem from 1671-1672. He died at the age of about 31.

Occupation: he inherited the mill and the other possessions from his father in 1783. He was appointed "schout" and "schepen" and "heemraad" of Raamsdonk in 1796, so he must have had impeccable revolutionary ("Patriot") credentials. He refused to pay the yearly contribution to ambachtsheer De Jong van Son in Dordrecht, but in the end he had to make a deal.

Geertrui and her husband Gerrit were related in the 5th degree through their common (great-)grandparents Gerrit Knaap and Geertrui Schouten. Geertrui Holster died at the age of 35, followed a few years later by her husband.
