AD 1700?-1848

For younger generations of ancestors who are descended from this family:
see page on Van Rossum

This Huguenot family has its origins in Orpierre, (Hautes-Alpes, Savoye) France. According to Captain Joannes Petrus van Rossum, this family may have been very distantly related to Hugues, the Count of Paris, also called "Capet", who became King of France in 987 and was the founder of the dynasty that included the Valois, Bourbon and Orléans royal families who ruled France for almost 900 years. Also a member of this family was Saint Hugues, in the 11th century the Abbot of the famous monastery of Cluny where the first open opposition arose against the corruption and other malpractices of the Roman Catholic Church at the time, eventually resulting in the schism between Roman Catholics and Protestants that was to dominate events in Europe for many centuries, and which caused many of our family's ancestors, including the Hugues family, to flee to the Protestant North. Even if the relationship of the Hugues family to Hugues Capet is not certain, this King is in our family tree anyway (see the page on the "Capet" Kings of France).
