AD 985-1470?

Sponheim
(Blankenberg, Carinthia, Chiny, Heinsberg, Istria, Lavanthal, Looz-Heinsberg, Mörsberg, Orthenburg)

For younger generations of ancestors who are descended from this family:
see page on Blois
see page on Saarbrücken
see page on Vianden
see page on Van Meeuwen

At the moment I am still researching this family, which ruled over numerous possessions, from Sponheim proper in Rheinland, Germany, to many scattered areas in Luxembourg along the Moselle, and further to the south and east in Switzerland and in Austria, including Carinthia. (There also is Sponheim in Norway, but that is not relevant here.) Sponheim never became a state, being constantly under pressure from its neighbours, especially the three powerful Archbishops of Mainz, Trier and Cologne. Carinthia, however, remains today as the southernmost state of Austria. I do not yet have a clear picture of the family relationships. There are a number of Ulrichs of Carinthia, the first of which was Ulrich I, who was supposedly born in 945 and was married to Richarde of Eppenstein. This Ulrich was descended from Charlemagne through King Ludwig II "The German". He became the great-grandfather of Richarde of Nordtal (of Lavanthal), the wife of Siegfried of Sponheim. Another Ulrich was supposedly born in 1106 and was married to Judith of Baden. Then there is yet another Ulrich of Carinthia (also called Udalrik of Istria), who appears to have been born in 1041, was married to Sophia of Hungary, and died in 1070. Their son Poppo III of Weimar married Richarde of Sponheim (born 1050?), see below. (This Richarde might even be the same woman as Richardis of Sponheim, who was earlier or later married to Berthold I of Schwarzenburg. I'll have to find out more about her.)
I have found that there were a number of Mathildes of Carinthia (or Sponheim), which could easily cause confusion. The sources I have seen give conflicting information on the parents of the Mathilde of Sponheim (or of Carinthia?) (born in 1130), who became the wife of Simon I of Saarbrücken. She may have been the daughter of Ulrich I of Carinthia (the one born in 1106), or the daughter of Meginhard (Meinhard) I Count of Sponheim, or Meginhard's granddaughter. Here, I have followed the assumption that she was the daughter of Gottfried I, Count of Sponheim (and therefore Meginhard's granddaughter).
In any case, I have so far not been able to find the link between this Meginhard (Meinhard) of Sponheim, who was probably born before 1100, and the earlier Sponheims and Carinthians. I have also not yet been able to establish a link between Gerhard I of Sponheim (supposedly the father of Count Friedrich I of Vianden) and all the other Sponheims.
