The castle of Vianden is now one of Luxembourg's many tourist attractions. In the Middle Ages, it used to be the mighty stronghold of the Counts of Vianden. The father of the first known Count, Friedrich I, is supposed to have been Gerhard I of Sponheim, who must somehow have been related to the other Sponheims in our tree. Vianden was directly placed under the German Emperor's authority until 1264, when Count Philip I lost a battle and was made a vassal of Henri V "Le Blond", Count of Luxembourg.
