The information on the earliest generations of this Roman Catholic family, originally from Weurt (also Wurdt) near Nijmegen in the Dutch Province of Gelderland has been kindly provided by Dr. Theodore C. Zwartkruis (USA). The unusual name of this family, meaning "Black Cross", was apparently derived from the black cross on the white cloaks worn by the Knights of St. John (the "Hospitallers"), who maintained a base in Nijmegen until the beginning of the Reformation. When the Protestant faith had become the official State religion, the Roman Catholic inhabitants of Nijmegen had to have a black cross painted on their houses as a clear sign (and a warning) that they were no Protestants. This practice was continued as late as the eighteenth century.
The black cross is also present in the family's old coat of arms which was rediscovered in the Archives of Nijmegen by Ed Zwartkruis in 1992. Ed also saw the article written by Jacques G. Peters on his Zwartkruis ancestors: "Het begon in Wurdt", Nijmegen 1985; also see "Mededelingen CBG" 48 (1994), nr. 1, p. 15. Jacques Peters had found the same coat of arms, in black and white, which was in the possession of Jan Zwartkruis (the former trainer of the Dutch national soccerteam). The coloured version, presented here, was rediscovered in 1993 among the papers inherited by yet another member of this family.
Our grandmother Maria Waalberg told us that her grandmother Maria Zwartkruis may have had "Spanish blood" because of her dark complexion, but this theory is not supported by the information that we now have.

5. Peter Janssen Swartcruys
* 28-8-1699 + ?
Peter became "buurmeester" of Weurt. At his son's christening he just gave Peeters as a second name (a reference to himself, as the father) but he omitted the Swartcruys familyname, probably taking it for granted. In later generations it was never used again, and so Peters accidentally became the surname of that branch.

Occupation: farmworker in Elst. In 1823, at the time of his daughter Maria's birth the family was living in nearby Lienden, but in 1830 they were living in Elst (Kadaster nr. 212). All four parents were present at the Joannes and Theodora's marriage ceremony. The couple already had a two years-old daughter at the time, Everdina "Hendrijkz". At Joannes' marriage his parents were present as witnesses. They stated that they could not read or write, and they did not even put marks on the certificate, probably being unable to hold a pen.

7. Christina Zwartkruis
* 22-6-1800 (Elst) + ?
Christina (unmarried) had a daughter Maria, who died young. They lived in the house of Albertus who apparently took care of them.

(Five of Thomas' children were alive when he died in 1822, which means that two of the girls must have died before then.)
