His first wife, Margrieta de Zoete (who was probably related to him) died at the age of 40 from a paralysis of the gullet. She and Hendrik had three children (not mentioned here). His second wife, our ancestor Maria van der Elst died at the age of 53 from a stroke. She and Hendrik had fifteen children, at least eight of whom died very young. Hendrik and Maria Blok had another seven children (not mentioned here). Hendrik died at the age of 88.

David Jansz. de Zutter was the founding father of the Dutch branch of this family. As a young boy he lost his parents to the plague. He fled the city of Gent in 1584 after it had to surrender to the Spanish army under the Duke of Parma. David first fled to Noordwelle on the island of Schouwen, and from there he went to Ouddorp on the island of Goeree, where he became assistant to a blacksmith. Later he himself became a blacksmith in Goedereede, and had his own shop in the Kerkstraat and a "hof" (garden) near the Varkensmarkt. He was twelve times "schepen" of Goedereede between 1604 and 1621.
