And some comments to the article
![]() | Sitting at my toilet I suddenly got an idea. We in Holland have a lot of rain and unhappy things can be combined. At our toilet we have a water reservoir at about 1.7 meters high. The water reservoir is producing the necessary pressure to clean the toilet and to have a good farewell from your biological end product. The vessel containing the water is strong enough to bend the tube between vessel and toilet a little (this is what I can feel and see). Sometimes this was also really visible because the rubber ring between tube and toilet was bad and water was spreading everywhere. Lots off wasted energy. Than, the idea came. The pressure of the emptying vessel might be strong enough to clean the toilet but also could be used for an other purpose. It could move a vehicle or any other thing. What we need is just a vessel that is filled up with rain water. Simple calculations and measurements show that this will give a flow of 5,8 Newton per 4 seconds. Not a great performance but it should be possible it move a little car with it. See figure on the left. |
| To keep the idea simple and cheap my idea was to make a simple rain racer. With the weather conditions we have in Holland it could be very interesting to develop a rain combat model but I would like to have some input from other enthusiastic people. The idea is made but I would like to have some input on my output. It must be possible to make a combat model for rainy weather conditions and have a greenpeace loveable competition. A combat model that can use rain as power and for those who want to fly inverted I could recommend 2 vessels. To warn all, I will put every effort and answer into this article with name and E-mail address. This to come to a quick and simple solution so there will be a discussion without being me the middle point of it. Thanks a lot guys, and see you next year at he first rain competition in Grave (Holland) 10-11 August next year..

| Hello, The bottom of the vehicle must be wider for more stability, the weight must be kept down. Instead of using the wheel, a magnetic bottom could be installed. There would be no friction from wheels But your crazy, I think it might work : ) bye p.s. I'm going to build a small model and try it. clevmitchell@hotmail.com
Oh Loet!
What about using the solar forces (like in a light mill) to use also the
Energy out of water? When reading Loet's ideas about water power I remembered an article in our locale newspaper a couple of years ago. The ideas had some similarities and I hereby let you compare it. To understand the theories you must first know some Swedish geography. The biggest lake in Sweden is Vänern and at it's bottom you find my home town, Vänersborg. At the top of Vänern you find the town of Karlstad. Se "View from above". The guy writing this article got his idea on a bright and clear day (not on a toilet visit!) at the seaside in Vänersborg. I think he had the famous expression "On a clear day you can see forever" in mind……… As he was standing there at the seaside he was surprised that he couldn't se Karlstad. Instead he just saw water at the horizon. Then he remembered that the earth is a bit round and made up a quick sketch (See "Side view"). When looking at the sketch the idea came striking on him: The water at the middle of the lake is at a higher level than in Vänersborg.
Why not dig a tunnel from the bottom at the middle of the lake down to Vänersborg and let the water flow through a turbine at a power plant?! You could get a lot of energy out of this! The following weeks he made more detailed plans and diagrams and then he started to try to raise money for the project. But, as he said in the article, "people just laughed at me". He tried to convince scientists at the university, the Swedish inventors society, the Swedish scientific board and others but no one bothered to take him seriously. I have no idea of the status of this project today as there have been no more articles. But I am quite sure that they haven't started any digging in the middle of Vänern even though we last winter had an all-time record concerning the water level of Vänern. Some streets by the seaside was closed for weeks because you couldn't see them. The level was about 2 meters higher than normal. Maybe Loet and this man should and discuss how to get energy out of water? Ingemar ingemar.larsson.vis@swipnet.se

Hi Loet, what's happen in case not rain??
hi
What a top idea.. This should get you in strong with a Nobel voted by the
On a slightly different note, what about windpower. You know those really windy days when you can't fly your combat model upwind, but when the motor cuts you can fly downwind like a kite?
Loet,
Found your rain powered racer while looking for information on Adriano models. You mention that the rubber seal on the toilet leaked, well, at least you now have running water. Will contests be cancelled because of lack of rain? As President Clinton said, "define rain". Have you decided on a standard for rain water? No doubt Germans will have heavy water, Kenyans will have genetically engineered water complete with high density superbugs, and the Japanese will surely file a protest against the Germans beause everything is lighter on that side of the world, just look at the claimed dry weight of their motorcycles. I suspect that God designed a +/- tolerance for gravity and the USA is on the heavy side, that also explains the obesity in this country. The damn French will try to weasel an advantage with their benzene tainted drinking water by using an afterburner. Has the FAI been approached on adding this event to the next World Championships? I think you have designed a very exciting event although I think we'll have difficulty running it in this country as the FAA severely restricts the use of rain cloud seeding aircraft. Charlie Johnson
