"The Afsluitdijk" was closed in 1932. The Dike has a length of 30 kilometre between the provinces of Noord-Holland and Fryslân.
In September 2001 the final lay-out with 109 turbines / 278 MW of a near-shore wind farm was chosen by the project-team.
In October 2001 the go-ahead was given by the government.
Different organisations for nature-conservation and environment were strongly opposed to the project.
On
March 11, 2002 the project was rejected by a majority in Parliament.
March 2008
A new 625 MW windplan has been revealed by developer E-Connection. It consists of two slightly curved parallel lines, some 30 kilometre long, south of the dike between the "Stevinsluizen" and "Kornwerderzand". These lines could contain a total of 125 turbines of 5 MW each. Yearly production is estimated to be 1.8 billion kWh. (1.845.000.000 kWh). That would cover 1,6% of Dutch electricity consumption or 550.000 households.
The plan is one of some 15 idea's to combine the needed renovation of the dike (adapt to rising water levels) with new activities. Other idea's are energy storage, covering the dike with solar panels, a racing-track for advanced busses, housing and "Blue Energy".
Others are saying that the dike should stay as sober as it is.
