This list of diatom collections is based on an ongoing series of personal enquiries resulting from de Wolf and Sterrenburg 1991. Besides collections in public herbaria etc., the list also includes some personal collections that will eventually be deposited in a museum. For each collection, we have specified the date at which the information was obtained. In some cases repeated requests for information have remained unproductive, these are readily recognized because the last update is given as "1975" (i.e. the data supplied in Fryxell 1975). Although the addresses given have been checked (e.g. with Holmgren et al. 1990), no further verification was possible for these supposed collections.

In general, this list is arranged by geographic location. For various reasons, some exceptions were necessary, where the collector’s name is now the entry. You can use the search function of your textprocessor.

We welcome additional information so that this survey may be kept up-to-date by E-mail to h.dewolf@planet.nl or fass@wxs.nl.

A hint for those who have not so far regularly consulted collections. When first contacting a collection or institute, DO NOT address your message to a curator (unless you have contacted the person in charge recently) by name. The curator listed may have moved and your message may then bounce or be left unanswered. We have encountered this situation personally. In such cases, address messages to "the Director" of the institute.

We gratefully acknowledge the help of our many correspondents all over the world who contributed to this survey. The aim of this list of diatom collections is to stimulate diatomists to exploit the scientific information in such deposited materials. In turn, this enhanced interest could assist curators in their effort to maintain the collections in their charge and to make them readily accessible to researchers. In this time of flux and uncertainty, that may be more necessary than ever before.

Summary of contents:
30,000 slide preparations and c. 5000 preserved samples. Historically important slide collection of 19th century material assembled by Professor G. Walker Arnott, containing material from Gregory, W. Smith, Norman, Greville, and other British and foreign collectors. Some of these are isotypes and the collection dates from c 1850 to c. 1865. Extensive slide collections and material from B. This diatom collection contains materials (several hundred samples) from an expedition to Greenland. Also: samples from a large variety of Swiss lakes and ponds, especially mountain lakes, collected pre-1940. Also: samples from Scotland, Iceland and Finland.

Kazan 2003

Rumour had it that there should be Mereschkowsky materials in the Kazan herbarium but our enquiry has revealed that this is NOT the case. There is a small batch of circa 100 slides including a few Thum and Boyer slides but the Kazan collection was thought to merely have an “educational function”.

Kinker collection de Wolf/Sterrenburg 2003

Circa 200 “Typenplatten”. Circa 1000 selected mounts of named species. Several hundred samples, including all the “classic” fossil deposits. Very large correspondence with all major late 19th-century authors.

Montana Diatom Collection:

No types; contains voucher slides of diatoms in periphyton samples collected as part of environmental monitoring and assessment projects, 1968 to date. The collection is still largely private (1100 duplicate slides now reside in the University of Montana Herbarium) but the remainder will eventually be transfered to the UM Herbarium. Size: Approximately 6,000 slides representing about 3,000 locales. (No raw or cleaned material; just slides).

Geographic Scope: Northern Great Plains, Northern Rocky Mountains, Pacific Northwest (Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, North Dakota, South Dakota, Washington, Oregon, California, USA)

Database: Taxa lists, metrics, and Information on sample dates and locations are included in an MS ACCESS database, which is updated weekly. Database is available electronically, on request. However, it is subject to change as I am currently working on a checklist of diatoms for the area covered by the collection.
