Autumn 2004: Living on Erraid

Its again four weeks in our stay on Erraid. Its about time to let you know how we are doing. Ok, here we go then:

In the first weeks we dont have a nice house yet. We hoped to setteld down right away but because this is a busy time we have to share an house with someone who is a long term guest. We cant really unpack our bags and everything is sitting in bags and boxes. This all doesnt help to get this feeling of home we hoped to find.

In the first weeks we had to adjust to all the little new things of Erraid and thats not always easy. A big depression in the weather makes it all look grim and wett. Its the coldest september in years and its snowing before we know it. But we kinda like it anyway. The food is pretty new aswell and eating vegetarian is cool. Too bad the unions are causing gass problems beyond imagination. Nothing can beat running in the porring rain to your ouside compost toilet. Its getting complicated when there are three cows in the same area and you dont want to know where and in what you are walking.. Too bad our nifty headlight doesnt show the difference between water and cowdung..But this is just shear fun for everyone inside when (or if) you come back :-)

Another little thing is the bread. Most of the time its very nice but it depends on who is making it. But the nice shortbread and sconnes make up for that. Our lovely daughter didnt fancy alot of it and we were feeding her noodles in the first week. This is something we see everywhere and still goes on even if we cook ourselves. She just has a particular taste. We try not to get uptight about this but its frustrating when someone has cooked a lovely meal and our Evelien doenst want any. But than again she is the only one not having trouble with her digestion.
