We decided that we wanted to visit Monkton Wyld Court. Its
in the south of England and we really liked the way their
website sounded and the way their brochure looked. Also we
knew that the climate was much milder and that there was
a kindergartenfacility.
Driving down 1250 kilometers through England was very nice, we stopped
to see some sights along the way but mostly we drove in two days straight
to Monkton. If it wouldn't have been for Birmingham we would have made
it in two days. Once we got there we enjoyed the roling hills and the
nearby sea. There was a jurasic beach nearby at Charmouth filled with
fossils, it was great fun walking and chipping for fossils. The landschape
appealed to us right away and specially the warmer climate was very good
on us. Monkton Wyld Court was once a monastary and school and now the
home of the community. The community is made up out of several members
who live there permantly and short term and long term volunteers.
To make money the community runs a fast amount of workshop
the whole year through. They runs their own workshops but
its also possible to hire the whole building for venue's.
You can also do B&B in Monkton without having the pleasure
of one the workshops. We could have stayed at Monkton doing
B&B until christmas if we liked but we wanted to do voluntering
work. We joined the volunteers after two days of bed and
breakfast and were now part of the team. We could only do
it for 7 days and than the community would like to review
your week and say if they would welcome you for the next
week, or not. I this has to do with the number of people
comming and going and the community would like to be very
clear on this.
The community also provides space for wayfarers, people
who dont have a place to stay for the night. A very warm
thing to do in this increasingly harder world. We met some
very nice people this way and we can only say we are glad
we came here. It wasnt easy for us to adjust to the way of
life comming from Erraid which still feels like a home to
us. The way people interacted was much differtent.
