On Anja's birthday the three of us went on
a little trip to Staffa Its nice to be away from Erraid every
now and than. We decided to do something special today. All
the time we stayed on Erraid we wanted to have look on this
so famous island.
Staffa is a remarkable island on the West Coast.
Its geological history and appearance make it unique. The
island is mainly build up out of hexagonal shaped lava columns.
When the lava cooled it cooled very quickly by the cold seawater
and they took their parculiar shape. Staffa is part of a
range of old lava islands walking from Ireland all the way
through Scotland. Its called the Gaint Causeway because the
island all have these strangely shape columns. Staffa and
the Giant Causeway are one of the worldwonders.
When we were there you could see young seals on the beaches. Their mothers
not far away looking for food. In the springtime you can find milions
of birds here. The famous puffins nest here together with gannets and
other seabirds. A spectacualr sight to see and worth a visit in the spring.
On our way back we stopped over at Iona to have a walk around and see
the Iona Abbey and giftshops. We didnt have much time but we enjoyed
the friendly climate on this little magical island. Have a look at our
last report when we took a longer visit to Iona. In the late afternoon
we sailed back to Fionnphort and back to Erraid,
which was the end of a perfect birthday. At dinnertime we got a spectacular
birthday cake and we all had a wonderfull evening.
